BICWA Chair, Melanie Tolich, outlines key election asks for the WA Beekeeping Industry ahead of the 8 March State Election
As part of its ongoing advocacy for the WA beekeeping industry, the Bee Industry Council of Western Australia (BICWA) has outlined a series of key election asks aimed at securing vital support for the sector.
BICWA Chair, Melanie Tolich, emphasises the need for a collaborative approach between government and industry to address pressing issues that impact beekeepers and the broader agricultural community.
“Western Australia’s beekeepers are at a crossroads, and we need decisive action from the state government to ensure the sustainability and security of our industry,” said Melanie Tolich. “BICWA's election asks are designed to safeguard the ongoing viability of the industry, enhance biosecurity measures, and foster a fairer and more accountable regulatory environment.”
Key Election Asks Include:
Sustainable Funding for BeeMAX Operations and Cybersecurity Compliance
BICWA calls for a dedicated annual allocation of $100k to sustain BeeMAX operations, including $60k for necessary cybersecurity testing in compliance with new government penetration testing requirements. BeeMAX is a vital tool for industry data management, and BICWA is concerned that without proper funding, its operation and cybersecurity will be compromised.
Funding for Full-Time Bee Industry Compliance Officers
The beekeeping industry faces challenges due to the absence of enforcement mechanisms. BICWA advocates for the appointment of two full-time, dedicated compliance officers within the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD). These officers would help improve compliance and enforce biosecurity measures within the sector.
Avenues for APC Fee Collection and Enforcement
BICWA calls for a more robust system to ensure compliance with the Agricultural Produce Commission’s (APC) mandatory fees. With increasing non-payment, these funds are crucial to sustaining industry operations and support. Fair and consistent fee collection is essential for maintaining the integrity of the industry, especially during these challenging times.
Increased Varroa Surveillance and Biosecurity Response Funding
As Varroa becomes endemic across Australia, BICWA urges the state government to provide ongoing funding for enhanced surveillance and a biosecurity response plan. This includes support for beekeepers in the event of an incursion. “The introduction of Varroa into WA would have significant implications not only for beekeepers but for the entire agricultural and pollination-dependent industries in the state. In a drying climate, maintaining health of our disease-free bees is crucial for our future food security,” Melanie Tolich warned.
“With the 8 March election fast approaching, we urge all candidates to recognise the vital role that beekeepers play in Western Australia’s agricultural landscape. BICWA’s calls for action are not just about supporting beekeepers, but about ensuring a sustainable future for the industry, the environment, and our agricultural economy, especially in light of the changing climate,” Melanie Tolich concluded.
BICWA looks forward to continued engagement with policymakers to ensure the long-term health and sustainability of Western Australia's beekeeping industry.
